I think that the specs are just about right, although I'd probably like to have seen the most battery efficient CPU used, instead of peformance considerations (how much processing power do you need to look at YouTube?). I'd also recommend that they get a product designer on board to sexify the casing design a little (although I realise that this is just a prototype). Additionally, I'd like at least 6 - 8 hours of usage time and a boot time of less than 20 seconds (I realise that this conflicts with my previous statement about the CPU performance :-)). In return, I would pay about 250 English pounds for such a device :-)

Why would you buy this over an iPod Touch?

Why would you buy this over an iPod Touch?

i was a ubuntu 8.10 user, it was really good, then...

i was a ubuntu 8.10 user, it was really good, then i moved on to fedora 10 and sad as it may sound fedora just sucked. then i got my hand on mint 6. and it is not good it is great. excellent work mint team, keep up the work.

Terrific review! W...

#1 Flexbility: OS X (Leopard) is certified Unix. Where is this argument coming from?

#2 Open Source: Agree, but they have the right to.

#3 Command Line: Again, UNIX

#4 Hardware requirements: Apple is a hardware company.

#5 Security: I agree, it's probably more a matter of secure defaults but I'm no expert.

#6 Portability: I call BS. I have OS X cloned on USB drives that I use to boot different computers. The migration utility that comes with OS X is amazingly superior to anything available on Linux at the moment.

#7 Cost: totally worth it for the hardware but, that's an opinion.

#8 More available software: Quantity vs. Quality. Linux has 10 options to do the same thing, and they all probably stink. You're right, searching freshmeat and google is completely unscientific.

#9 Dumbed down: Windows dumbs things down. OS X only forces you to deal with the stuff you need to deal with. If you want to deal with something, you probably can. The cost of adding a million configuration options to the number of people using each options doesn't always warrant the cost. This is why frameworks like Rails have taken off.

#10 Keyboard Efficiency: Use a full keyboard to get a delete key. I can use emacs keyboard commands around OS X. I can easily assign keyboard commands to ANY menu option in ANY program, without having to edit a textfile configuration somewhere in the depths of my path. As for the mouse, my mouse has at least 5 buttons and a clickable, 2-axis scroll wheel. I can also use up to 4 fingers to do different gestures on my touchpad.

My take: If you have a server, deploy on some unix variant. If you want to use your computer without having to mess around with stuff unnecessarily use OS X. If you want the sense of true freedom, you want to buy cheap hardware, or you do need to mess around with some crazy, obscure setting, feel free to use Linux. I have for 15 years.

Nothing new here, move along.

In the first paragraph is an error.Mac OS X is bas...

In the first paragraph is an error.

Mac OS X is based on BSD, Mach and Nextstep. And if you can't use the terminal properly; you shouldn't mess with SPM either.
