More Fun with Compiz

A few days back, I told you how to make "the cube" effect work. Today, upon request from Christopher ( a reader/commenter), I will dig a littler deeper into the compizconfig-settings-manager.

So, lets start out where "Vadi" suggested.

"Cube Reflection and Deformation"

The effect that this thing gives is actually a nice twist to "the cube". What it does, is that it turns your "cube" into a cylinder.

Inside the options menu you have the ability to change the images on the caps, amount of reflection, and some other great tweaks. I really liked the stock look of what it gave me, so I left it alone.

Another cool feature is that you have passively enabled is a "desktop wall" . The way you can see this is by pressing crtl+alt+down arrow

It should look an awful lot like this. You can change between your desktops by hitting the right and left arrows (while still holding down ctrl+alt)

"Animations"

The last one that really interested me was the "Animations" option. This is a highly customisable option, that sort of encapsulates a bunch of the individual options into one.

As simple as this option may seem. It is the one that I enjoy the most. As you can see in my screenshot, I set everything to random. Its like opening a happy meal every time I open, close, or minimise my screens.

There are a bunch more options that can be used inside of the compizconfig-settings-manager. However, most of them just do not appeal to me. I'm sure that once you get it, you will see what I mean. The nice part of the whole thing is, that its very very simple, and can be done by just about anyone that understands how to use a computer.

Its true that Linux is growing by leaps and bounds. Everyday I am amazed at how easy it is to use. Currently, I am running Ubuntu 8.10. Soon, I will be moving on to another distro, so you can have a side-by-side review of all the popular ones.

Judgeing by the poll today, Fedora 10 will be my next distro to try. If you would like to see me try Fedora, or some other build, please vote in the poll that is located on the right side panel. There is still time to rock the vote folks.

As always, I write on what you want to see. Therefore, if there is anything relating to Linux or "Open-Source" that you wish for me to research, and write about. Please Email me at blake@thelinuxnewb.com or leave a comment on any post.

Good on you for trying new ones.

Like I said, trying different window managers (such as KDE, IceWM, Fluxbox, E16, Xfce and the like) within one distro (ubuntu, fedora, whatever works) and playing with it. It gives you an idea of what job the window manager (whether in linux or windows) does, because some of the more simple WM you pretty well get them to make the desktop for you, rather than a prearranged desktop.

Always enjoy keeping up with this.
