Google Gadgets

After my recent post regarding screenlets, a commenter (christopher) suggested that I test out Google Gadgets...

Google Gadgets for Ubuntu 8.10

What a great lead that was!! The stock widgets used by Google Gadgets look awesome! leave it to Google to come out with something like this. We can start where I started, you know what Google Gadgets is (in general), and now you need to know where to get it.

Start by going here

  • If you are running Ubuntu, you can go down and select under "featured download" the "Binary Packages" (or just click that link) then navigate to the package that you need in specific (click here if you run Ubuntu 8.10 and want to skip the BS).
If like me, you are running Ubuntu 8.10, then the package should install itself. You can then start it up by navigating to Applications>>Accessories>>Google Gadgets (GTK)

It should pull up a sidebar, where you can easily add or take "gadgets" away. Additionally, they have a very wide variety of both Google made, and 3rd party gadgets. You can find them in something called "Gadget Browser" which is already installed!! So, select what you want and get them loaded up!!

I tested a few of these Gadgets out, and the ones I like best are the ones made by Google.

What I currently have installed is:

  • Google Gadgets Weather Globe
  • Webclips (Google Designed)
  • Google Gadgets Analog Clock
This is what it looks like:

Now, I will go out on a limb here and assume that you will want this puppy to run on startup. Not a problem, just head over to your "sessions" which can be found at System>>Preferences>>Sessions

Make it then click the "+Add" and make it look just like mine. click "Save" and your done.

So, Google does it again. They've created a great program that can be run on multiple operating systems. For me, it has completely replaced Screenlets, however there is a way to integrate these widgets individually into Screenlets. I did not head down that avenue, so unless specifically requested I will stick with what I have.

Rating for [Google Gadgets]: 5 out of 5

Google gadgets actually can be integrated into Screenlets. See the Import function in them somewhere.

Don't use either now, not really useful to me :|

I keep up with the blog using the RSS feed. I also like the day/night world clock, I set it on a city/part of the globe and just watch when sundown occurs.

If you want a distro to try next, play with the light ones - openGEU is a bit of fun, puppylinux is good, albeit ugly, but it runs great on older systems (I mean less than 1ghz, it still flies along).

Another thing you could play with, is installing different window managers (KDE, E16 (E17 is still developer level), fluxbox, XFCE) - it gives you a great deal to play with, plus some extra apps pop up even in Gnome, as a result. Good learning tool.

Finally, have you had a play with the login screen (GDM) or the splash screen (install usplash, if not already done) - you can change your boot up splash, plus your login screen - less daunting than brown.
